5-ON-5 RULES

SOCIAL COLLEGE LEAGUES

All games will be played under the Official Basketball Rules of FIBA, except where they are modified by the following rules.

Game Length

  • Social College - A game consists of 2 x 18 minute halves.

Breaks

  • Teams will be given a 1 minute break at halftime.

Game Clock

  • Games will be played with a running clock.

Substitutions

  • Substitutes must be made at the score bench.

  • The referee will signal when substitutes can go on the court.

Time-Outs

  • No timeouts.

Overtime

  • If a game is tied at the end of regular time, 2 minutes of overtime will be played.

  • Overtime will start with a jump ball.

  • First team to score wins.

Teams

  • A team consists of 12 players maximum, with 5 players on court for each team.

Defaults

  • A team that defaults will receive -1 competition points while the opposition team will be awarded a score of 10-0 and 2 competition points.

Management

  • All teams must have a Coach/Manager or Parent seated with the team for each game. If this person is not present, the game will be cancelled and the opposition win by forfeit.

Scorebench

  • Each team must provide one person for score bench during their own games.

Players

  • A team must register all players on their roster.

  • There is no maximum number of players allowed on a roster.

  • A team must have 5 players minimum and 12 players maximum to play a game.

  • Only players and coaches are allowed on the team bench during games.

Mouthguard

  • All players must wear a mouthguard when they play.

Uniforms

  • Players must wear matching team singlets with large individual numbers on the back.

  • A player may wear a t-shirt underneath their team singlet.

  • A player may wear religious clothing as long as their team singlet is visible.

Point System

Win: 2 competition points
Loss:
1 competition point
Default:
-1 competition points

Tiebreakers

If teams have identical point totals, the following tiebreaker rules apply (in order):

Tiebreaker 1: Team with the fewest number of defaults
Tiebreaker 2: Head to head
Tiebreaker 3: Highest/best cumulative point differential

Equipement

  • Full court

  • 10ft hoop height

  • Boys - Size 7 basketball

  • Girls - Size 6 basketball
